This binding disrupts fatty acid transport and induces apoptosis in these endothelial cells, cutting off the blood supply to the associated fat cells. With a molecular weight of 2611.41 g/mol and the sequence Cys-Lys-Gly-Gly-Arg-Ala-Lys-Asp-Cys—Gly-Gly–(Lys-Leu-Ala-Lys-Leu-Ala-Lys)2, it has been shown in monkey studies to induce significant weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce body mass index. The targeting of prohibitin, a protein also found in some cancer cells, opens additional research avenues in oncology for anti-angiogenic tumor starvation strategies.
